Marlborough sextons report recovered stones, complete America 250 cleaning at Century Cemetery

Sextons Zuri Lane‑Griffore and Zephyr Griffore reported to the Town of Marlborough Cemetery Committee on June 18 that recent maintenance and preservation work recovered multiple buried markers and completed planned America 250 cleaning at Century Cemetery.
At the meeting, Zuri Lane‑Griffore said May activity included zero lot sales and three burials: two cremations and one full burial. She reported that after Public Works removed a dirt pile in Marlborough Cemetery, staff recovered 18 footstones, one headstone and two stone fragments; the sextons returned 16 footstones and one headstone to their locations and straightened many monuments. Wayne’s Tree Service removed a dying maple and the remaining town funds will be used to trim overhanging branches.
In Century Cemetery, preservation work has begun with sextons cleaning, repairing and resetting many buried stones. Zuri said stones of historic interest received special attention during cleaning and that the sextons are researching the artists responsible for some elaborate carvings. The committee noted the completed America 250 task of cleaning all marble stones in Century Cemetery and that a pamphlet about cemetery history is in progress, led by Zephyr Griffore.
The sextons also reported work at Jones Hollow cemetery, which began June 17 and is nearly complete, and that they reset and stabilized the New London Turnpike marker located by Doug’s Barber shop. Other 2026 projects discussed included adding fresh mulch at the Veteran’s Memorial and Marlborough Cemetery before July 4, obtaining a quote to repair or replace the School Drive cemetery gate, and road improvements to be handled by Public Works.
Committee members praised the recovery and preservation work and directed sextons to continue documenting historic stones and to bring a gate repair quote to a future meeting. The sextons indicated continuing research into stone carvers and further conservation of identified historically significant markers.
Next steps include assessing quotes for the School Drive gate, finalizing the America 250 pamphlet, and coordinating road improvements with Public Works.
