Board approves Longview summer meals program at four sites after OSPI sign-off

The Longview School District board voted to approve the district’s summer food service program during its June 22 meeting after staff confirmed OSPI site approval.
Food service manager Rick Trainer described operations and results from previous years, saying the district expects to run meal service at three longstanding locations and an added fourth site this year at Discovery to support students in credit-recovery programs. ‘‘Last year we fed about 3,750 meals over the summer,’’ Trainer said, and staff told the board sites will be open to any child age birth–18 regardless of attendance area.
Patty (board/staff role) and multiple board members praised the program and asked operational questions about site coordination, advertising and whether meals could be publicized through Skyward; staff said information appears on the district website and can be pushed via other messaging tools.
A motion to approve the summer food service program as presented was moved, seconded and adopted by voice vote. No member requested additional conditions; staff reiterated the program has OSPI approval and will proceed.
Why it matters: Summer meal programs provide nutrition and, in some sites, a way to engage students in credit-recovery or enrichment activities during the summer months.
Next steps: Staff will operate the program at the approved sites and pursue routine communication steps to publicize locations and hours to families.
