Suffield Charter Revision Commission stands by original recommendations, will meet Board of Selectmen

Chairman Eric Remington opened the Suffield Charter Revision Commission's special Zoom meeting on Jan. 3, 2025, at 4:07 p.m. and reviewed a referral letter from the First Selectman about the commission's recent recommendations. Public commenters urged the commission to keep its original proposals unchanged.
Two residents addressed the commission during public comment. Annie Hornish of 864 Thrall Avenue said she was disappointed by the short notice for the special meeting and encouraged the commission to stick with its earlier recommendations. Sandra Janik of 380 Prospect Street expressed appreciation for the commission’s work and recommended it stand firm on those recommendations.
Commissioners then discussed the First Selectman’s referral and whether newly available information warranted revising the commission’s earlier proposals. After the discussion, the commission reached a consensus to stand by its original recommendations. Selectman Kathie Harrington suggested holding a joint meeting of the Charter Revision Commission and the Board of Selectmen so each group could present its positions and concerns. Chairman Remington and Selectman Harrington agreed to coordinate that meeting.
Commissioner Mike Haines moved to adjourn; Commissioner Elizabeth Kaplan seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. The meeting minutes were submitted by Recording Secretary Kristen O. Lambert.
The commission did not vote on any changes to its recommendations at this session. The next procedural step is a joint meeting to be scheduled between the Charter Revision Commission and the Board of Selectmen to discuss the referral and the commission’s recommendations.
