Board advances CIP to first read; adds two portable classrooms and notes $510,000 startup cost

The Stonington Board of Education voted Jan. 9 to move the capital improvement plan to a first reading next week in the budget process and to include startup costs for two portable classrooms at the middle school.
Chris Donahue moved and Katie Gauthier seconded “To make this a first read of the CIP and vote on it next week during the budget process.” The motion passed 6–1, with Sara Baker voting no.
Board member Kevin Agnello asked for clarification about the portable expense. Stephen Carroll clarified that the portable startup cost is $510,000. Chair Farouk Rajab asked that board questions be sent by email to Stephen Carroll through Superintendent Butler so staff can compile a master list of questions and responses.
The superintendent noted that a Jan. 14 tour of the middle school will include BOF, BOE and town/district staff to review short- and long-term space options, and that core sampling at 204 Mistuxet Avenue is scheduled for Jan. 22 to inform decisions about the building’s future use. Portable startup costs were added to the CIP for board consideration; the motion to advance the CIP was procedural and will be followed by budget hearings next week.
