Robbins mayor urges intergovernmental collaboration to tackle budget shortfall and expand youth services

Mayor Darren E. Bryant opened a special meeting of the Village of Robbins mayor and board of trustees on Oct. 23, 2021, calling for unified action among municipal and district leaders to address a village budget and debt crisis and to expand services for children.
"We must strategize and begin to hold the State Representatives and Senators accountable," Mayor Darren E. Bryant said, framing the convening as the first time multiple Robbins entities had met together to pursue shared solutions. He asked attendees to consider shared financial books, a coordinated tax-increment financing (TIF) strategy, and pooled grant-writing and lobbying resources to increase access to state and federal funding.
The meeting gathered representatives from PRSD 143.5, CHSD 218, the Robbins Park District and the William Leonard Public Library District, along with village administrators and trustees. Attendees identified several near-term coordination opportunities: creating a Robbins-wide database and communications platform to distribute youth-program information; displaying agency program materials at village hall; and coordinating transportation solutions so students can access after-school programs.
Trustee Michael Collier Sr. thanked the board for recent traffic-calming work on Lydia Street and recommended installing a digital speedometer near schools to improve safety during arrival and dismissal times. Officials also discussed using district and park facilities for evening adult-learning classes and expanding face-to-face tutoring programs.
The board did not adopt formal funding commitments during the meeting; instead, members agreed to continue planning across agencies and to pursue grants and infrastructure projects jointly. The meeting adjourned at 12:38 p.m., following a unanimous motion by Trustee Tiffany S. Robinson, seconded by Trustee Michael Collier Sr.
Next steps identified by participants included sharing points of contact for grant applications, assembling program lists for a village information hub, and pursuing targeted infrastructure grants for the library and school facilities.
