School committee adopts artificial-intelligence guidelines for staff and students

The North Middlesex Regional School Committee voted June 23 to adopt a set of artificial-intelligence guidelines for district staff and students, directing administrators to implement the procedures and begin training.
Committee members said they consulted models from other districts and sought legal review. Michael Labosier, who led the discussion, described the vote as a practical first step: “we need at least a baseline policy to work from,” he said, noting that AI in schools is rapidly changing and that an administratively maintained set of procedures would allow the district to adapt. Superintendent Morgan said the guidelines balance access for instruction with protections around academic integrity and staff training and emphasized the need to update the practices regularly.
The guidelines address permitted and prohibited tools, requirements for staff professional development, steps to protect student academic integrity and processes for identifying and addressing prohibited use. The administration said the document has been legally reviewed and will be distributed to staff and families and used as a basis for training.
The committee approved the guidelines by roll-call vote; the administration will continue work on procedures and return with updates as the technology and legal landscape evolves.
