Arlington County plans sidewalk, curb and signal upgrades on Fort Myer Drive near Langston Boulevard

A presenter for Arlington County said the county will widen sidewalks, realign lanes and replace traffic signals along Fort Myer Drive near Langston Boulevard to improve safety and predictability for people who walk and drive in the corridor. "We're on Fort Myer Drive near Langston Boulevard, where we're getting ready to bring improvements for everyone who travels through this high-volume traffic area," the Presenter said.

The presentation named three primary focus areas for the Fort Myer Drive sidewalk improvements project. "The Fort Myer Drive sidewalk improvements project will have three primary focus areas," the Presenter said, describing the effort as focused on pedestrian facilities and traffic operations.

On Fort Myer Drive, the county plans to widen the west sidewalk between the two directions of Langston Boulevard and to realign lanes to create more predictable travel patterns, the Presenter said. At the Fort Myer Drive and eastbound Langston Boulevard intersection, crews will extend curbs to shorten the distance pedestrians must cross and will replace traffic signals.

The Presenter noted recent signal work at that intersection, saying, "Did you know in 2024, Arlington County separated the pedestrian and left turn signal phases at this intersection, which means that when pedestrians have the right of way, all vehicles have a red light." The presentation said crews will also replace traffic signals at the eastbound Langston Boulevard and North Nash Street intersection as part of the project.

The Presenter warned that construction will include traffic pattern shifts and detours. "During construction, expect traffic pattern shifts and detours," the Presenter said. The presentation did not specify a construction schedule, timeline or budget for the work.
