At the Feb. 11 Town Board meeting, Edgemont High School junior Elise Lim summarized her research on mental‑health outcomes among second‑generation immigrant teens and urged programs to strengthen parents’ emotional communication skills.
"The biggest takeaway from this study is that parental support matters in terms of reducing 2nd generation teens' mental health challenges," Elise Lim said, describing a survey of 102 Asian and Latino teens and findings that emotional support correlated most strongly with lower depression scores. Lim told the board her research found informational support was less effective in some contexts and that cultural differences influenced how support was perceived.
Supervisor Paul Feiner praised Lim’s work and invited continued presentations of findings that could inform local youth and family programs.
The board also issued a proclamation recognizing the Vivian Holland family for their Snow Angels volunteer program, which cleared driveways for elderly residents during a heavy winter. Supervisor Feiner noted the program’s public‑safety value, saying volunteers’ efforts “actually potentially saved people's lives” by ensuring emergency access for seniors.
Vivian Holland and family members accepted the recognition and shared a brief account of their volunteer efforts and contact information for interested neighbors. The board encouraged volunteer recruitment and highlighted the program’s role in community resilience during severe weather.
