Council reviews first reading of zoning changes to add gyms, schools and animal-care standards

Enumclaw’s council opened a public hearing and received a staff report on Ordinance 28-38, proposed municipal code amendments to allow a wider set of uses in commercial and light-industrial zones and to add standards for animal shelters, daycare and boarding.
Senior Planner Winston Larson summarized the proposal, saying it would allow arts and vocational schools, gyms, health studios and certain animal-care services as permitted uses in defined zoning districts and would introduce definitions and standards to address compatibility near residences, including setbacks, requirements for indoor pens/kennels and waste disposal.
Larson noted the planning commission recommended approval on April 23 and staff recommended the council give the ordinance its first reading. No public commenters spoke in the chamber and the mayor closed the hearing at 7:17 p.m. The ordinance will return for additional readings and potential adoption at a later meeting.
