Octagon House trail in Shirley finished; county installs photoluminescent aggregate and prepares 'silver dollar' path

Board members reported completion of the asphalt portion of the 1,800-foot multi-use trail along the Octagon House frontage in Shirley and walked through remaining amenities and installation details.
The Chair announced that photoluminescent aggregate has been installed and that the asphalt portion of the 1,800-foot trail is complete. The board described a planned 470-foot segment for the Octagon portion that will receive four-foot-diameter "silver dollar" insets containing historical facts; those silver dollars will be spaced at about 47-foot intervals. A representative from Globe Asphalt (referred to in the meeting as Rich) measured and marked the silver-dollar placements and indicated installation was underway.
Board members said landscaping and bench installation were delayed because the county is seeking an 8-foot black wrought-iron bench to match city benches; delivery was estimated at seven to ten weeks. The Chair said the county will wait for that bench to avoid repeated landscaping visits.
Members also discussed placing a Serowski monument and possibly mounting a plaque on a nearby rock adjacent to a bench; details remain under discussion with contractor Ruble.
What’s next: staff will photograph the silver-dollar installation, update the website and social media with project photos, and finalize landscaping and bench procurement before finalizing site amenities.
