Residents urge action on Greenwood Cemetery; mayor points to ongoing turf-transition plan

During the public-comment portion of the June 23 Lexington City Council meeting, residents raised concerns about Greenwood Cemetery upkeep and the condition of the downtown area.
Rhonda Fokken, Deb Sund and Nancy Price voiced complaints about maintenance at Greenwood Cemetery; Sund additionally said downtown was in poor condition. Mayor John Fagot responded that the city initiated a course of action years ago to transition to sustainable turf at Greenwood Cemetery and that the city is resolved to continue that work. He said an overview of the plan had been provided several weeks earlier and asked residents to be patient because the process will take time.
Mayor Fagot urged residents to report problems to the Community Services Director rather than to seasonal employees or by attempting repairs themselves. He also said fencing and signage improvements are planned for both cemeteries later in the year and that rules and regulations will be posted and strictly enforced. "Undue criticism and personal attacks are not warranted," he said, adding that city staff cares greatly about all city facilities.
The public comments did not result in a council action at the meeting; the mayor’s statement placed the issue in the hands of city staff for follow-up and signaled planned physical improvements later in the year.
