Berwyn council approves up to $316,000 in TIF funds for Roosevelt Road Art Plaza

The City of Berwyn City Council voted to authorize the use of tax increment financing redevelopment project funds not to exceed $316,000 for the 6209 Roosevelt Road Art Plaza within the Roosevelt Road redevelopment area.
The motion to concur with a communication from the Berwyn Development Corporation and adopt the resolution was made and seconded and passed by roll call with eight ayes. The resolution authorizes the corporate authorities to execute necessary signatures and move the measure toward passage.
Council discussion noted that the parcel is intended to be programmed in partnership with a local park district. Members cited the park district's track record of maintaining and programming similar public spaces as a rationale for working with the North Berwyn Park District on long-term upkeep and programming, and noted plans for fencing and scheduled events to ensure appropriate use of the plaza.
The resolution was presented as a community development investment intended to provide a public-facing arts “third space” and to support local arts groups and small businesses in the area.
The council's roll call in favor listed Caldwell, Coleman, Ligas, Pace, Chapman, Poulasha, Brokman and Carmichael. The motion carried.
Next steps include final document signing by the mayor and city clerk and coordination between the BDC, Berwyn Public Art Initiative and the Park District for programming and site preparation.
