Mayor Pro Tem Cortez opened the meeting by recognizing Pride month and then introduced a series of tributes to Councilmember John King as the council presented a commemorative video and awards marking his retirement after more than 30 years of service. The council and visiting officials praised King’s record of public service, mentorship and community engagement.
Speakers from the dais and the audience recounted King’s leadership roles, including multiple mayoral terms and steady support for public safety programs. Christiane Salama, representing Congressman Gil Cisneros, and Natalie Tong from State Senator Susan Rubio’s office presented certificates recognizing King’s service to the region. Several council colleagues described King as a mentor and an active community presence; staff presented a “Covina tile” and a ceremonial street sign.
King addressed the council and audience, thanking colleagues, family and staff and reflecting on the personal and civic meaning of his service. Council members noted that the council will welcome newly elected members next month and offered well wishes for his retirement.
The meeting proceeded after the presentations; no formal policy actions were taken as part of the recognition.
