Wauwatosa board adopts revised 2026–27 calendar, adds two professional learning days

The Wauwatosa School Board voted June 22 to adopt a revised 2026–27 academic calendar that adds two professional learning days: a districtwide staff day on Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, and an elementary-only professional learning day on Thursday, April 29, 2027.
Administrators described the days as teacher-directed opportunities intended to increase professional efficacy. The superintendent said professional learning days will no longer be “sit-and-get” sessions only; staff may choose from a menu of options or use the time for teacher-directed preparation. Board members asked questions about how common planning time and early-release days will be used; administration said common planning will no longer be mandated in the same way and that one weekly faculty meeting will be scheduled during contractual time.
Supporters said the calendar addition gives elementary staff an extra day near the end of the year and provides an early fall opportunity to recalibrate after the start of school. The board approved the revision by motion and roll-call vote.
The board also noted that committees — including curriculum and instruction and professional climate and culture groups — will help develop the menu of options for the newly added days and provide staff voice in designing professional learning.
The calendar change takes effect for the 2026–27 school year.
