Commerce Public Library launches 'Plant the Seed, Read' summer program with hydroponic garden and Charlie Cart

Sylvia Cisneros, senior librarian for the City of Commerce Public Library, presented the 2026 summer reading program on June 9, describing a community-wide set of events and educational activities under the theme "Plant the Seed, Read."
Program highlights include reading challenges for all ages, prizes including tickets to Dodger games, special events such as puppet shows, magic acts, live-animal programs, a Native American seed program, bonsai and succulent workshops, and a Charlie Cart — a mobile teaching kitchen funded by a California State Library grant. Cisneros said the library will introduce a hydroponic "flex farm," an indoor garden that allows produce to be grown using significantly less water and will provide hands-on learning opportunities. The library plans neighborhood kickoff celebrations at Rosewood, Bandini and Bristol branches on Monday, June 15; doors open at 10 a.m. and the Rosewood kickoff was scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
Cisneros said the program aims to connect reading with gardening, healthy-eating education and family-friendly activities. She invited residents to register and attend branch events throughout the summer.
