Alana, who represents Lowcountry Gullah, told the Beaufort County accommodations tax advisory committee that her group is expanding destination marketing and has launched an eight-day Gullah Geechee heritage tour from North Carolina to Florida that includes several nights on Hilton Head Island.
She said Lowcountry Gullah operates a high‑traffic website, podcast and social channels that have generated tens of thousands of monthly visitors, and that the site and its heritage-tour advertising are intended to convert interest into overnight stays. "We're reaching over 89,000 site views and nearly 55,000 social followers," Alana said. She also described a recent documentary and festival appearances, and said the group fields hundreds of inquiries tied to ancestry and heritage trips.
The presentation included survey and demographic figures for heritage tourists and a pitch that Hilton Head—s Mitchellville, the Gullah Museum and related assets fit the corridor—s demand for authentic cultural experiences. Committee members pressed for clearer, island-specific metrics; one asked how the presenter arrives at an estimate of tens of thousands of tourists and whether the number could be carved out to show heads-and-beds attributable to Hilton Head specifically.
Alana said the tour reserves three nights on Hilton Head and that event-by-event attendance and QR-code data support her reach estimates; she also said Lowcountry Gullah will provide more targeted data on heads-and-beds after the next tour runs in February and October. The committee noted it favors requests that show a demonstrable local lodging impact.
The committee did not vote on funding at the meeting; the presentation concluded with an agreement to provide follow-up data on Hilton Head-specific bookings and the tour—s likely heads-and-beds impact.
