Committee OKs request to extend Planning Commission review for West Side rezoning

Chair Kobe Owens convened the Health, Environmental, Aging and Disabilities Committee on June 24, where Councilman Chris Johnson introduced a resolution asking the Planning Commission for more time to consider a rezoning application affecting 1010 Bancroft Avenue and 2140 West 11th Street.
Gwyneth Kaminski, Department of Land Use and Planning, told the committee that the city code allows a 90‑day review period for zoning changes and that the original 90 days expires on July 15. "This 90 days extends the review period through mid‑October and would allow Planning Commission's review to be scheduled in July or, if requested, by the applicant or council in August or September if necessary," Kaminski said. She characterized the request as a routine, code‑permitted extension that provides more time for the developer, the Planning Commission and the public to coordinate.
Council members asked whether the extension reflected substantive delays; staff said the extension was requested to align the project with the commission's meeting schedule and ongoing public engagement. The committee scheduled the item for the full City Council agenda on July 2 for final action.
The committee did not take a final vote on the rezoning itself; the extension request was described as a procedural step to ensure the Planning Commission can prepare a recommendation and hold hearings as needed.
