Center City approves public‑works changes and hears park safety concerns; DNR pier work scheduled

The Center City Council approved several public‑works actions and discussed park-safety and infrastructure items at its Sept. 3 meeting.
Council approved purchasing a new cell phone for the public‑works department and changing posted Friday public‑works hours to 7–11 a.m.; both motions passed 5–0 (motion to purchase cell phone moved by Ryan Pease and seconded by Lloyd Vetter; hours change moved by Mark Wolcott and seconded by Ryan Pease). Council also approved extending a seasonal public‑works employee through Sept. 29 to continue watering flowers (motion by Ryan Pease, seconded by Lloyd Vetter; vote 5–0).
Public Works member Mike Roggemann told the council the old DNR fishing pier is scheduled for removal Sept. 4 and that a new pier should be installed the week of Sept. 9. Roggemann also reported community concerns about the safety of timbers and mulch at Water Tower Park and asked the parks committee to consider replacement and the possible addition of a portable restroom. The council agreed to forward those items to the parks committee for follow-up.
Clerk Dana Miron additionally informed the council that the GWorks public alert system will be shut down Dec. 31, 2024 as the vendor launches a new version; she said the city is not obligated to upgrade and will explore alternatives, including the new city website or the county alert system.
Next steps: Parks committee will review playground-surface safety and restroom access options; public‑works staff will implement the approved staffing and hours changes.
