Canby council denies permanent fence request, approves signs, parcel split, appointments and hiring recommendation

The Canby City Council on Aug. 8 denied a request from Jerry Kubiszewski (doing business as Born in the Barn) to install a permanent fence behind his business. The council said the fence would interfere with the intent of parking-lot agreements, jeopardize emergency-vehicle access, impede service access for neighboring businesses (trash and deliveries), create potential issues for accessible parking, and hinder effective snow removal and ground maintenance. The Planning Commission had recommended denial and the council voted unanimously to deny the request.
The council approved several Planning Commission recommendations: a flat business sign for Ridge Rock Financial Services at 125 1st Street E; a parcel division for parcel 31-414-2603 (addresses 507 Oscar Ave N. and 507 ½ Oscar Ave N.), with staff noting two separate water connections; and an updated sign insert for Westwood Extended Stay at 110 10th Street A. Motions to approve those items passed unanimously.
Council also acknowledged a letter from the League of Minnesota Cities recognizing Senator Dahms as a 2024 Legislator of Distinction. The council appointed Gary Ellenbolt, Jane Ormseth, Brenda Lothert and Judy Bednar as additional election judges by motion. After interviewing four candidates for the Account Clerk IV position, the council recommended offering the job to Sara Wollum and to extend an offer to the second candidate if Wollum declines.
The council approved July 2024 vendor transactions in the amount of $373,928.02 and adjourned the meeting. All motions and approvals recorded in the minutes were unanimous.
