Calumet council approves Blandin grant application, local permits and cleanup support

The motion was made by Councilmember Nicholas Porter, seconded by Mayor Mike Troop, and carried with all five members present voting in favor.
The council also approved zoning permits for two residential additions requested by Lee Ramsey and for a 16x25-foot addition tied to TLK Restoration; approved $300 to support an Iron Range Soccer city clean-up effort (the city will supply bags and the field may be used if the group maintains lines and carries insurance); and authorized three roll‑off dumpsters for Calumet Clean‑up Days (May 23–27) with delivery and disposal fees set at $200 per dumpster and $100 per ton.
In other business the council approved a five‑year agreement to prosecute nuisance/blight cases at $1,000 per month starting May 1, authorized employee and council attendance at the League of Minnesota Cities annual conference (June 26–28) at $275 registration plus hotel and mileage, approved a new Federal fire siren installation at the water tower (Clerk to confirm electric hookup), and approved an LMC safety workshop April 22 for two public works employees at $20 each.
Financial context noted during the meeting: Clerk & Treasurer reports list receipts of $43,142.95, disbursements of $79,148.76, investments of $12,606.56 and a total checking balance of $156,263.72. Engineer Alan Johnson said Bolten & Menk will submit a PPL/IUP application to seek WIF funding possibly matched with IRRR funding; the city is not committing to projects now but may access 1–2% low‑interest financing or Congressional Directed Spending if projects advance.
Next steps: Clerk April Serich will execute the blight‑prosecution agreement and follow up on grant application paperwork; the council scheduled a special meeting with Meyer Group Engineering to discuss city hall repairs and set a closed special meeting for nonpublic data discussion on April 21.
