Calumet council appoints Nicholas Porter to fill vacant seat

Calumet’s City Council voted unanimously April 15 to declare a council seat vacant and appoint Nicholas Porter to serve through Dec. 31, 2026. Mayor Mike Troop moved to adopt Resolution No. 25-4-15 to declare Amanda Hernesman’s council position vacant and to appoint Porter; Councilmember Barbara Banks seconded the motion and the vote in favor included Troop, Dan Strand, Banks and Steve Serich.
The appointment followed consideration of two letters of interest and in-person remarks from both candidates. After the vote, Clerk April Serich administered the oath of office to Nicholas Porter and he immediately joined the council.
Why it matters: Porter will serve the remainder of the current term, which runs through Dec. 31, 2026, altering the council’s composition and committee assignments noted later in the meeting. The council took the action during its regular April meeting; no recorded opposition to the appointment was reported.
The meeting continued with routine business and project approvals; Porter participated in subsequent votes including a Blandin grant application for city projects and other local approvals.
