Calumet council approves application for MDH grant to add cameras at pumphouse

The Calumet City Council on Aug. 20 voted to apply for and accept a Minnesota Department of Health grant to install security cameras at the municipal pumphouse.
Mayor John Tuorila moved to approve and adopt Resolution #24-08-20-2 authorizing the application to and acceptance of MDH grant funds for security cameras. The motion passed with votes recorded in favor from John Tuorila, Tim Zaren, Amanda Hernesman and Dan Strand; Councilmember Nick Porter was marked absent for the vote. The resolution authorizes city staff to proceed with the grant application and, if awarded, to accept the funds and implement the camera installation.
Council also approved a separate motion to allow Minnesota Power to move an existing light from Julie’s Jungle Park to the Depot parking lot, or to install a new light if that proved more cost-effective. The lighting motion was approved with Porter absent.
The grant approval follows concerns about facility security discussed earlier in the meeting. The council asked staff to coordinate the grant application with recommended specifications and to report back on potential costs not covered by the grant.
