Mayor John Tuorila resigned effective 4:00 p.m. on Aug. 20, and the Calumet City Council formally adopted a resolution declaring the mayoral vacancy during its Aug. 20 meeting.
The council voted to adopt Resolution #24-08-20, a motion made by Councilmember Tim Zaren and recorded as For: Zaren, Dan Strand and Nick Porter; Mayor Tuorila abstained from the vote. The resolution sets the vacancy effective 4:00 p.m. on Aug. 20, 2024.
Tuorila, who presided over the meeting and led the Pledge of Allegiance, told the council he will depart for Maine on Aug. 21 and thanked members for his 18 years of service. Councilmember Tim Zaren, who the council later designated Mayor Pro‑Tem through Dec. 31, 2024, thanked Tuorila for his long service and noted their occasional disagreements but said Tuorila always acted in the city’s interest.
The council took no action to appoint a replacement at the meeting; the mayoral vacancy will be addressed through the regular election process, with the municipal election scheduled for Nov. 5, 2024. Clerk April Serich recorded filings for the upcoming election, noting Mike Troop filed for the two-year mayoral term.
The council adjourned at 3:50 p.m.
