Calumet City Council on July 16 approved a $200,000 partial payment to Itasca County for the Gary Street reconstruction and authorized a change from a 3/4-inch to a 1-inch water line to the curb stop at 931 Gary St.
Itasca County Engineer Ryan Sutherland told the council that Casper Construction had a late start, the project required adding one block of water main after work began, and temporary water-line samples initially produced bad results. Sutherland said the contractor expects to finish water and sewer work this week and next week, then test for leaks and begin removing sidewalks, with an estimated full project completion date of Aug. 13. He also noted nearby events that could be affected: bicycle tour rides on Aug. 10 and 17 and the Kid’s and Cars in the Park show on Aug. 24 at Mine Park.
Mayor John Tuorila moved to approve upsizing the private-service line at 931 Gary St. (the Simunovich Beauty Shop building); the motion was seconded by Councilmember Dan Strand and carried unanimously.
The council approved the $200,000 partial payment (motion by Councilmember Dan Strand, seconded by Mayor Tuorila). Council members discussed resident requests for driveway curb cutouts on Gary St. and decided not to allow curb cutouts on that road. They also directed that the first three light poles from #169 remain because power lines are attached and noted plans for two 20-amp receptacles on the cabinet by the city shop and a sleeve needed for the flagpole by city hall.
The meeting minutes record receipts of $17,300.34, disbursements of $66,321.93, investments of $9,847.05 and a checking balance of $318,555.47; council members asked staff to ensure investments are deducted from disbursements when splitting accounts. The council approved the minutes and financial reports earlier in the meeting.
Next steps: the county engineer will continue to oversee remaining water and sewer testing and sidewalk removal; the council did not change its decision on curb cutouts and authorized the partial payment to continue the construction schedule.
