Buhl council approves donations, renewals, hires and event permits

The Buhl City Council on July 9 approved several routine administrative and community items, including accepting a donation, renewing memberships, authorizing grant applications and approving event permits.
The council accepted a $200 donation from Ziegler Companies to offset Independence Day advertising and activities and adopted Resolution 24-19 by roll call (Hadrava,Aye; Kealy,Aye; Loeffler,Aye; Towner,Absent; Carter,Aye). The council also authorized renewal of the Minnesota Rural Water Association (MRWA) Associate membership for $400 for Aug. 2024–July 2025; Administrator Jeffries noted MRWA will assist with smoke testing as part of the city's inflow and infiltration (I&I) work. The Iron Range Economic Alliance (IREA) membership renewal for 2024 at $75 was also approved; Jeffries said he has served on the IREA board for about six years.
On insurance, the council voted not to waive the statutory tort liability limits under League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust coverage as set by Minn. Stat. § 466.04; City Attorney Kearney noted that the City has followed this practice historically.
Personnel and events approved included hiring Jaeden Loeffler as a 2024 beach attendant contingent on successful completion of pre-employment requirements (motion carried with Councilor Loeffler recorded as abstaining); approval for Buhl Knights of Columbus Council 5612 to pursue exempt bingo permits for Nov. 23, 2024 and April 12, 2025; authorization for the Administrator and Recreation Board to evaluate and, if eligible, apply for a Minnesota State Arts Board Cultural Expression grant; and approval to close the 100 block of State Street from noon to 6 p.m. on July 20, 2024 for Billy's Pit Stop Pub 'n Grub's car show, with barricade assistance for traffic control.
