The Swisher City Council voted to pause the use of reserve deputies in December and January and to re-evaluate staffing and enforcement outcomes at its February meeting.
Members discussed data from reserves since April, including traffic stops, underage possession citations and other incidents. One council member said reserves had been visible and that pausing for the holiday period would allow the council to assess whether their presence is reducing incidents. Another member proposed removing reserves for a month or two to test the effect.
Council directed staff to have reserve supervisors attend the February meeting so members could review more complete data; in the meantime staff may authorize the nearest available contractor or responder in an emergency (for example, for snow removal backup) under previously discussed contingency arrangements.
No formal resolution establishing permanent policy was passed; the council recorded consensus to suspend reserves for December and January and scheduled reassessment for February.
