Mendota council reviews park-plan survey priorities and hears near-complete water-project update

Mendota — At its Oct. 14 meeting the Mendota City Council reviewed Planning Commission feedback on park improvements and received an update that the water project is approaching completion.
City Planner Jennifer Haskamp summarized the Sept. 24 Planning Commission meeting and distributed memos outlining survey results collected online, on paper and at a community picnic. She said the top priorities identified were improvements to the mail path, construction of a multi-use (basketball) court, upgraded playground equipment and surfacing, additional benches and smaller projects; long-term maintenance of those features was discussed. Haskamp told the council that developer-funded park money will be disbursed when the apartment project receives its certificate of occupancy and that the city will have no deadline to spend those funds.
On the water project, Engineer Liz Thompson reported that all water mains will be tested that week, fire hydrants are in place, a new storm culvert was installed and that fine grading and paving are expected to be completed by the end of next week; gates and site restoration are pending. Thompson's update described remaining, mostly final tasks rather than major outstanding construction work.
Council members also noted local volunteer efforts on the historic jail (about 60% of exterior work completed) and upcoming community events, including a Halloween party scheduled for Oct. 25, 2025. Clerk Kathy Krotter reported the apartment project expects tenants to move in on Nov. 1 and that the building will have its own mail delivery arrangements.
The council did not take a final vote on park projects at this meeting; staff will continue to refine plans and funding timing and will bring items back for formal action as required.
