Mendota council moves $30,000, approves routine items and authorizes legal notice over Axel's fence

Mendota — The Mendota City Council approved routine procedural items and one enforcement action during its Oct. 14 regular meeting at the Mendota VFW.

The council voted unanimously to approve the agenda and the Sept. 9, 2025 minutes. It also approved the treasurer's report and a motion by Mayor Mielke to transfer $30,000 from the city's savings account into checking; the transfer was approved 5-0.

Public comment raised zoning concerns about a fence at the property known as Axel's, which attendees said is expected to house a yoga and massage business. The city attorney, Christina Benson, said the fence did not comply with Mendota's zoning code and that the property had not applied for a fence permit. The clerk was authorized to send notice to the business. Following that, Council member Golias moved and Council member Donnelly seconded a motion authorizing city attorneys to send a letter if Axel's did not respond to the clerk's notice; that motion passed 5-0.

City Clerk Kathy Krotter reported that the nearby apartment project expects move-ins Nov. 1 and will have its own mail delivery. City officials also discussed park funding tied to that development (see related article on the park-plan discussion).

The meeting concluded with Council member Lee moving to adjourn; Council member Donnelly seconded and the council adjourned at 8:12 p.m.

The council did not take further enforcement action at the meeting; staff were directed to notify Axel's and, if there is no reply, for city attorneys to proceed with a formal letter.
