Mendota council authorizes $709,000 water project, schedules preconstruction meeting

The Mendota City Council on Aug. 12 approved motions to advance a water infrastructure project with a new contract amount of $709,000 and scheduled a preconstruction meeting for Aug. 21, 2025, at 10 a.m.

Engineer Lucas Jones told the council the project is "moving forward, and we have a new amount of $709,000.00," and said the city has roughly $650,000 in grant funding toward the work. The council authorized the mayor to sign change orders under $710,000 and approved motions covering the cultural-resources construction monitoring plan, the contractor agreement and the notice to proceed. The motions were moved by Mayor Mielke and seconded by Council member Golias and were recorded as approved 4-0.

Lucas said he will put together contact lists to provide regular resident updates via the city website, clerk and emergency services; a resident asked about project duration and Lucas estimated the work would take about a month and a half. Council members also confirmed that an extra fire hydrant discussed at a prior meeting has been reinstalled and included in current plans.

The approvals give city staff and the contractor authority to begin mobilization once required preconstruction steps are completed. The council did not record a detailed construction schedule in its motion; Lucas indicated the preconstruction meeting will include scheduling and signature items that need mayoral authorization.

The city will provide further details to residents after the preconstruction meeting and as work progresses.
