Shelburne Equity and Diversity Committee approves gift-card purchases, plans cross-committee attendance

Facilitator Sarah McIlvennie called the Town of Shelburne Equity and Diversity Committee to order at 6:07 p.m. on June 22 and led a 70-minute meeting that approved the day’s agenda, deferred approval of prior minutes and recorded two action items tied to upcoming community engagement work.
Committee member Dave McLean moved to approve the meeting agenda; committee member Michele Crowder seconded and the motion passed by a majority with no opposition. A motion to approve minutes from an earlier meeting was deferred because the committee lacked a quorum for the June 8 session.
The committee heard several routine updates from McIlvennie. She said a Pierson Library employee had asked the committee to participate in an upcoming community conversation focused on disability, but the meeting time conflicted with work hours; McIlvennie offered to follow up one-on-one with the library staffer or the community member who requested the committee’s presence.
McIlvennie also reported attending two Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission Economic Mobility (EMO) working groups coordinated by Cymone Bedford. Those regional sessions, she said, included neighboring municipalities such as South Burlington, Winooski and Essex and covered topics including entrepreneurship data to support local entrepreneurs and a civic-engagement training project for community liaisons.
Under culture and community updates, committee members said the Laplatte Hi Neighbor! event had been canceled after multiple postponements because of inclement weather; the town is at capacity for adding new summer events, so the committee will proceed with two scheduled fall events and may reschedule the Laplatte community for a later date.
Town leadership confirmed and approved purchasing gift cards to provide materials and food for future Hi Neighbor and Heritage Potluck events, the committee was told. The cards will be kept at town offices and staff will track purchases when the cards are used.
On strategic planning and commissions, members continued a June 8 retreat conversation about a proposal from McIlvennie to integrate elements of Winooski’s Inclusion & Belonging Commission into Shelburne’s structure and work. The committee reviewed equity toolkits from other municipalities (including South Burlington and Long Beach, N.J.) and resources from the Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE). Members agreed to use the July 13 meeting to work through the new structure and to assign each committee member to begin attending other committees, boards or commissions to gain familiarity with municipal processes.
The meeting recorded two action items: McIlvennie will follow up with Pierson Library about the community conversation by July 13, and all committee members will review Shelburne citizen boards/commissions/committees (CBCs) and recommend which to prioritize for cross-attendance by the July 13 meeting.
There were no public comments or announcements. Committee member Dacia moved to close the meeting; committee member Phu Ly seconded. The motion carried by majority and the meeting adjourned at 7:37 p.m.
