Oak Forest Veterans Commission approves essay contest prizes, reviews Memorial Day and outreach requests

At its May 21 meeting the Oak Forest Veterans Commission approved the April meeting minutes and voted to fund prizes for a 250 essay contest, according to the minutes.
Member Jim Pioth moved to approve the April minutes and Dennis Mitzner seconded; the minutes record unanimous approval by members present. Later in the meeting, Dennis Mitzner moved — and James Hanlon seconded — a motion for the commission to purchase gift cards as prizes for a 250 essay contest: $50 for first place and $25 for runner-up. The minutes state contest participants will receive discount coupons to Jack Frost.
The commission thanked Paul Selman for coordinating Memorial Day flag posting around town on May 16 and noted a Memorial Day service at the City Hall campus. Members also shared brief updates: Tom O’Neill discussed support from the VA and a stair lift installation at his house; Ralph Chichester announced a June 6 Republican meeting; Dennis Mitzner recounted a ceremony for a World War II veteran who had no kin and a lunch at Prairie Bluffs with Becker and James Watson.
Under new business the minutes note that Patrick Williams of the Cook County Forest Preserve contacted Chairperson Joe Pilch to request an information table and said he has a band that would like to participate in a future IDC event. The minutes do not record a final decision on that request.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 20:xx after a motion by Dennis Mitzner and a second by Jim Pioth. The next meeting is scheduled for June 18, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. in the Blue Room; dates and times may change with committee approval.
