The Byron Mayor and Council voted Feb. 13, 2023, to authorize the mayor to take steps to request local legislation from the Peach County legislative delegation to de‑annex a portion of Peavy Road and to annex portions of Houser’s Mill Road into the City of Byron.
The adopted resolution references a March 20, 2007 agreement with Fort Valley that establishes an annexation line and service delivery provisions and a May 8, 2017 intergovernmental agreement with Warner Robins. The minutes note that the portion of Peavy Road proposed for de‑annexation lies in Land Lots 35 and 36 of the Fifth Land District and includes rights of way beginning at land currently owned by Gottwalls Properties, LLC (Peach County Map and Parcel ID 053D 074), running south to its terminus at Georgia Highway 247 Connector. The portion of Houser’s Mill Road proposed for annexation lies north of the annexation line and is described by land lots 15, 16, 37, 41 (and possibly part of 36), commencing at the southwest corner of land owned by the City of Fort Valley that contains the water tower (Peach County Map and Parcel ID 052 039) and running northerly to the intersection with GA‑247 Connector.
Council Member Michael Chumbley moved, and Alan Dorsey seconded, a resolution authorizing the mayor to jointly request the Peach County legislative delegation to introduce and work to secure passage of local legislation to carry out the annexation and de‑annexation as described. The motion passed unanimously.
The action directs the mayor to take ‘‘all actions deemed necessary’’ to pursue the legislative request; final annexation or de‑annexation would require successful passage of local legislation and any related procedural steps with county or state entities.
