GVI representatives visit Laurel; Family Fun Day planned and youth programs urged

Representatives from the Attorney General’s Office and local intervention programs briefed the Town of Laurel Mayor & Council on May 18 about the Gun Violence Intervention (GVI) initiative and community supports.
Cory Priest, identified as Director of the Office Community for the Attorney General, said the GVI model began in Wilmington after the CDC declared gun violence a public-health crisis there and was later adopted in Laurel following high-profile shootings in 2023. Priest and program partners, including Ron Handy of Leaders In Transition and Sam Ford of Operations Correction Probation & Parole, described services and supports meant to help individuals change harmful patterns.
Priest announced a Laurel Family Fun Day on June 6, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Council and staff thanked the presenters. Precious Henry also gave a youth update urging more events and programs after a recent youth bowling event that drew about 20 young participants.
