Work session: roundabout underway; stray facility inspection, staffing shortages and LMIG bids discussed

County Manager Thomas Weaver used the Feb. 24 work session to brief the Commission on several infrastructure and operations items.
Weaver said the roundabout project is underway and advised residents to avoid the intersection while work proceeds; although the contract lists a 60-day schedule, Weaver said he believes a year is a more realistic timeframe. He also reported a recent inspection of the county stray facility that raised concerns; the county has 30 days to address the issues identified in the inspection report.
Public-works updates included replacement of a radio shed (waiting on Columbus Communications to connect equipment), storm-damage cleanup, a repaired pipe on Hitchitee Creek Road and septic repairs at the sheriff’s department. LMIG paperwork has been forwarded to an engineer so bid packets can be prepared; commissioners discussed possible LMIG and regional project candidates (Liberty Hill Rd., Riverbend Rd., Friendship Rd.) and noted that Fort Moore might assist with paving on parts of Riverbend Rd.
Weaver also reported staffing pressures associated with IGSA and underground-storage requirements and said the county is working through minor compliance items with the provider. Recreation staff extended baseball registration and scheduled youth basketball finals for March; small maintenance projects were flagged for upcoming work.
Cemetery bylaws and committee terms remain on the work-session list while the county attorney arranges a meeting with the Cemetery Committee to align bylaws with state law. The Commission entered a brief executive session on personnel matters and reconvened the work session the same evening.
