The Dubois County Council voted 6—— to deny a resolution presented by Sheriff Tom Kleinhelter authorizing disbursements from the Sheriffs Commissary Fund for employee funerals, retirements, gifts and local travel.
President Michael W. Kluesner opened discussion; the sheriff explained the requested uses. Council members questioned whether those uses were consistent with the county Employee Policy and Procedures Handbook and elected to follow Indiana Code 36-8-10-21. Ryan Craig moved to deny the resolution and Meredith I. Voegerl seconded; the motion carried 6—— with Alex P. Hohl the lone dissenting vote.
Council created a commissary review committee (Kluesner, Ryan Craig and Meredith Voegerl) to review the commissary report for Jan.–June 2024 and set reporting expectations: the sheriff will provide reports by Jan. 10 and July 10 for the preceding six-month periods. The denial means requested expanded uses were not authorized; council directed adherence to state code and existing county policy.
