Residents press council on park safety, fireworks and parking at Hickey White Park

You've got kids riding dirt bikes at the park... and I'm there with little ones and I don't see anybody ever stopping them." Several council members raised fireworks concerns ahead of July 4. Council members explained that Crystal City permits fireworks only on a single permitted day when July 4 falls on a Saturday and said banning fireworks outright risked setting officers up to enforce a rule that might be widely disobeyed. "If I ban fireworks our police are going to be set up for failure because they're going to be done anyway," one council member said, urging safe use and neighbor awareness.
A longer round-table exchange focused on parking during a basketball tournament at Hickey White Park. Councilperson Bradley described driveways blocked by cars and unclear 'no parking' sign orientation and asked staff for a fix. Staff said signs had been placed after resident requests but acknowledged some signs face the street and could be ambiguous; the council suggested adding an additional no-parking sign closer to the levy gate and that the park board will review a proposal for a new parking lot near the basketball court. Mr. Turner, the street engineer, and the police department will review signage and parking restrictions and report back.
The council asked city staff to review parking signage and traffic-flow options for large events, and to coordinate with the park board on longer-term parking improvements. The meeting closed with repeated council reminders about enforcement options and public-safety awareness.
