The Board of Public Works and Public Safety continued a public hearing on Jan. 14 regarding an unsafe building order at 513/515 E. Main Street, assigning a new hearing date of Feb. 4, 2026, at 10 a.m.
Barry Lewis, the city’s code enforcement officer, told the board “nothing with the property has changed since the first public hearing on December 10, 2025,” indicating the property still met conditions that prompted the original unsafe-building process. Property owner Dannetta Cummins-Thornburg provided documents to the board showing she had been approved for a loan intended to repair the roof.
Mortgage lender Steven Breaks addressed the board and asked for additional time to allow Cummins-Thornburg to complete the repairs. In response, Mayor Todd Barton moved to continue the hearing to Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. and requested that trash in the trailer immediately east of the property be removed prior to that date. The motion was seconded by Susan Albrecht and passed on a voice vote.
The continuation preserves the city’s oversight authority while allowing the owner and lender time to complete roof repairs; the board required the trailer cleanup as an immediate corrective step. The board will revisit the unsafe-building order at the scheduled Feb. 4 meeting unless the cited conditions are remedied beforehand.
