Covington council approves AED, metal detector purchases and hires River Group for utility garage design

Councilmember Randles moved to purchase the unit from Utility Supply Co. for $595.00; Councilmember Smith seconded and the motion carried 4-0, with Councilmember Copenhaver noted as arriving late and missing the earlier votes.
Police Chief Foster presented a quote for an AED from Stauffer Glove and Safety priced at $2,243.00. Councilmember Smith moved to purchase the AED Plus fully automatic defibrillator; Councilmember Martin seconded and the motion passed 4-0.
Mayor Crain asked the council to accept River Group to design the city’s new street and electrical (utility) garage, saying the fee would not exceed $10,000 and would include required state permits. Councilmember Smith moved to retain River Group and Councilmember Martin seconded; the motion carried 5-0.
The council also publicly thanked Supt. KC Smith and his department for fixing a recent leak that had prompted a temporary city water shutdown and thanked Supt. Myers for operating wells during that event.
Next steps: The River Group design will be used to prepare bids for construction of the new garage; meeting minutes do not specify a project timeline or target bid date.
