Haverhill council approves bills and annual financial report; seeks shelter‑house manager

The Haverhill City Council approved the payment of the city’s listed bills and unanimously adopted the city’s Annual Financial Report at its regular meeting on Nov. 11, 2024. Mayor Madaleine Welton called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.
Council member Faith Daters moved to approve payment of the bills as presented; Mayor Madaleine Welton seconded the motion and the council voted aye (Daters, Faircloth, Stalzer, Vanderah and Welton). The clerk had provided itemized fund balances and bills for review, including an October ending balance of $200,975.37 and listed receipts totaling $29,698.90.
The clerk also presented the City’s Annual Financial Report for submission to the State. Council member Faith Daters introduced a resolution to approve the report for the State; Council member Stalzer seconded and the resolution carried with all members voting in the affirmative.
Council reviewed individual fund balances and expenses, including: Public Works balance $4,300.35 (street lighting charges to Alliant Energy); Public Safety balance $94,512.65 (items included: FD phone and internet charges, generator repair, contract law enforcement billing); General Government balance $22,040.58 (Clerk/Treasurer salary and IPERS payment); and Culture & Recreation balance $3,755.93 (mowing and a reimbursement listed to Faith Daters). The minutes record a contract law enforcement report noted by the Marshall County Sheriff.
On staffing and operations, the council discussed accepting applications for a person to manage shelter‑house rentals and cleaning. Interviews are scheduled for January; the minutes state Council member Stalzer will serve as interim until a hire is made. The council did not record a separate formal vote on hiring details in the minutes.
The council also announced that Santa will make his rounds in Haverhill on Sunday, Dec. 15, starting at 4 p.m.; residents were asked to leave porch lights on if they want a stop. The meeting was adjourned at 7:20 p.m. The next regular meeting is set for Dec. 16, 2024, at 6:30 p.m.
