The Hoyt Lakes City Council voted Aug. 12 to approve a quote for a new ambulance and remount/equipment package after a staff presentation that emphasized reliability, parts availability and service warranties.
Staff described two main options: purchasing a new Ford E450-based ambulance or attempting a remount of the existing box onto a new chassis. Staff and vendors said parts for some older ambulance components will be discontinued within seven years, arguing a full replacement reduces future maintenance risk. A vendor representative discussed serviceability concerns for Chevrolet chassis in the region and noted local service capability for the Ford powertrain.
Staff provided a tentative delivery target of Jan. 26 for a newly ordered vehicle; remounting the old box on a new chassis was described as taking about two years, compared with roughly one year for a new build. Council discussed costs, the trade-off between remounting older equipment and buying new, and the availability of local mechanics for medium-duty chassis work. One councilmember supported the Ford option because of local service prospects.
The council moved, seconded and carried a motion to proceed with the recommended purchase and award based on the quoted specifications. Council members noted the option to remove the trade-in value for the previous ambulance if the city chooses to sell it rather than include it in the purchase calculation.
Why it matters: The ambulance purchase affects public safety capacity, fleet reliability and foreseeable maintenance costs for Hoyt Lakes’ emergency medical services.
What’s next: Staff will finalize ordering details and adjust the budget/financing as needed; estimated delivery is about 13 months from order.
