The Worthington Public School District board on June 16 approved a package of 2027 summer projects and a resolution authorizing general‑obligation facilities maintenance bonds to fund long‑term facility work.
Jeff, a representative of Site Logic, told the board the largest planned project is a high‑school roof replacement — "the biggest one being the roof replacement here at the high school. The largest section, probably 80% of the roof will be replaced." He also described full replacement of window walls on the high school north wing, window replacements at Prairie Elementary, interior door replacements in the high school north wing, replacement of three aging middle‑school air‑handling units (RTUs numbered 10, 11 and 12) and short‑term repairs and soil sampling to address tipping light poles at the middle‑school softball field.
Board members asked whether replacing all Prairie Elementary windows was necessary and whether inoperable replacement windows would affect egress; the administration said the recommendation was to replace all vintage windows for efficiency and uniformity and that the new windows would not be used as emergency exits. The board also discussed whether to bundle all work into a single summer versus phasing projects across years and the advantages of ESCO (energy savings) financing for some measures.
Ryan and Joel walked the board through the bond timetable tied to the long‑term facilities maintenance (LTFM) plan: the district is submitting narratives to the Minnesota Department of Education for approval this summer, expects approvals and bond pricing in mid‑to‑late August/September, and aims to close bonds in October with funds available in November. The construction cost estimate presented to the board was about $8.8 million; the district project schedule splits costs across fiscal years and projects a rolling fund balance of roughly $2.8 million after the planned work.
The board approved both the 2027 summer projects and the resolution adopting the LTFM plan and authorizing the sale of facilities maintenance bonds by roll call votes.
Votes at a glance: the motion to approve the 2027 summer projects passed on a voice/roll call vote; the motion to adopt the LTFM plan and authorize bonds passed on roll call.
Looking ahead, administration will finalize the LTFM narratives for MDE and return with detailed bid/funding recommendations and a construction schedule before contracts are awarded.
