Heather, presenting the curriculum committee recommendation, told the board the pilot would focus on seventh-grade students (with options to expand if successful) and would combine instructor-led lessons with an online module so absent students could keep pace. "Our preference was not to have it be just a computer program; it should be taught by instructors," she said. The committee recommended a model of two sessions per week for seventh graders and described research supporting the program over small sample sizes.
Board members asked whether the $3,000 initial cost was per pupil or total; staff confirmed it was the total initial cost. The curriculum committee moved to approve the pilot; following a discussion about delivery and evaluation, the board approved the motion by voice vote. The district intends to revisit results roughly one year after implementation to decide whether to expand the program to additional grades.
Next steps: staff will implement the instructor-led pilot in 2026–27, monitor outcomes, and report back to the board in spring 2027.
