Council approves temporary 'tennis only' sign at Rainier Trails Park

The Enumclaw City Council on May 26 approved placing a temporary sign at Rainier Trails Park asking users to limit play to tennis and directing pickleball players to the newly resurfaced courts at Dwight Garrett Park.
Councilmembers raised neighborhood complaints about noise, parking and public urination near Rainier Trails Park. Community Services committee members had discussed these concerns and recommended a signage approach rather than a codified ban. Council emphasized that a temporary sign is instructional and not a codified, enforceable restriction.
"Please limit use to tennis…Pickleball courts are available at Dwight Garrett Park," a staff representative said, describing the proposed verbiage and direction the sign should provide. Council members discussed alternatives including welcoming language directing users to larger courts with bathrooms and whether such a sign could create expectations of enforcement; staff and council agreed the sign should be instructional, temporary and revisited after the newly resurfaced courts have been used.
A motion to place a temporary sign passed by voice vote. Council asked staff to coordinate language, reach out to local pickleball groups about any incurred costs for court striping, and reevaluate the sign's effect in about a month.
