Council work session backs placing AECOM design task order for Fairburn Road on April 6 consent agenda

City staff asked the Douglasville City Council to place on the April 6 consent agenda authorization for Task Order No. 2 with AECOM Technical Services to advance preliminary engineering on the Fairburn Road corridor.
The request, presented by City Engineer Marcus Thompson, would fund schematic and preliminary design, signal and lighting planning, landscaping, environmental documentation and a Phase II environmental site assessment required under the city's existing master design engineering services agreement with AECOM. "Task order number two is basically authoriz[ing] our design consultants to advance this project further into the preliminary engineering phase," Thompson said.
Council Member Chris Watts noted the project is part of the city's LCI (Livable Centers Initiative) work and asked for confirmation of funding sources; Thompson said the current phase is roughly 80% federally reimbursable, reducing the local share for design. Council asked technical questions about schematic elements and public outreach and agreed to place the task order on the consent agenda for the April 6 voting meeting.
If approved next week, the work would produce the design-level plans and environmental clearances needed to seek construction funding and permits. Staff said more detailed cost and schedule information will be available in the final consent package.
