Melrose school board approves multiple policy updates, custodial contract and new girls wrestling program

The Melrose Public School District board voted to approve updates to multiple district policies, a custodial contract and the creation of a girls wrestling program during its regular meeting.

Superintendent Winter told the board the policy updates had been reviewed twice previously by the policy committee and presented the items for final approval. The board unanimously approved policy updates on open meetings (Policy 205), public hearings (Policy 207), the code of ethics (Policy 209), board member development (Policy 212), student discipline (Policy 506), corporal punishment (Policy 507) and school meals (Policy 534).

A board member asked for clarification that the student discipline policy vote would not change the board’s separate review of disciplinary processes; the chair confirmed the procedural clarification would be handled outside the policy vote.

The board also approved a custodial contract that the custodial negotiation committee had negotiated. Board materials included redlined and final contract copies; the board thanked custodial staff and the negotiating committee for their work.

On athletics, the board approved a motion to create a girls wrestling program as a cooperative sport with nearby schools. The coach at the meeting described local growth in participation, estimating roughly 15–20 girls from Melrose and additional participants from partner schools. Board members said the Minnesota State High School League is discussing formal sanctioning of girls wrestling and that full sanctioning could occur later in the school year.

All listed items were approved by voice vote. The board packet contained background materials and the redlined documents for the contract and policies.

What happens next: staff will complete contract finalization and implement the new athletics program logistics; policy changes take effect per the district’s policy schedule.
