Planning Commission forwards updated 2010 Comprehensive Plan for Board review after public hearing

The Smyth County Planning Commission on Feb. 24 voted to forward its updated 2010 Comprehensive Plan review to the Board of Supervisors after a public hearing and staff briefing. Planning staff explained that Virginia law requires a five‑year review and that the 2010 census produced less-detailed data than expected; staff said Chapter II (Economy) would be updated once the more detailed census estimates became available.
At the public hearing resident Earl McClure urged the Commission to delay formal action until census data were fully available, questioned the presence of cost estimates for encouraged projects and pressed for a commitment to an interchange for the McMullin/Adwolfe community. Deanie Demmick asked how the plan is implemented and where funding would come from. Planning staff member Sally Morgan explained how census information is aggregated and said the Committee reviewed current information and planned to revise Chapter II when detailed census data were released.
Commissioner Dennis Blevins moved to forward the updated plan to the Board for consideration; Commissioner Norman Sparks seconded the motion and the Commission approved the action. The minutes note staff will incorporate VDOT comments and the newly available 2010 Census data into the draft before further review.
