Northwoods Transit Connections reports 280,000 one-way miles, seeks grant for vehicle repair and facility site

"Over the past 10 years NTC has provided approximately 280,000 miles one way rides," Newman said, describing a fleet that includes nine buses, three transit vans and two minivans and a workforce of three full-time staff, two part-time staff and 15 part-time drivers. Newman said daily operating costs — including salaries, fuel, maintenance and insurance — are covered through grants from the Department of Transportation.
Newman told the committee NTC provides regular rides for seniors and people with disabilities, plus transport for special programs such as trips to a food pantry, grocery shopping and ADRC events. She said one van is currently out of commission pending a grant to cover repairs, and that NTC has completed a land survey for a potential new facility on Julia Lake Road and is awaiting an appraisal before proceeding with grant applications for a building to house staff and parking for buses and vans.
Committee members asked follow-up questions during discussion but did not take action on the transit item. The presentation provided local officials and committee members context about regional transit capacity and the agency’s grant-dependent capital needs.
What happens next: NTC will await grant decisions to repair the van and to pursue construction of a facility; committee members received the report for information.
