Mount Holly staff received council consensus June 22 to proceed with initial work on a 2.35-acre downtown park and to start selective timbering as early as July 1.
Mr. Dupont told council the city owns 2.35 acres west of the stream and additional property east of the creek; staff proposed natural-surface trails, minimal grading, playgrounds, restrooms, creek access and pedestrian connections to the park across Kataba Avenue. He recommended in-house trail construction and hiring an outside contractor for selective timbering.
Dupont said three bids for selective timbering came in just under $40,000 and recommended beginning the clearing work on July 1. He also proposed public engagement (an online poll and at least one public meeting) to rank amenities and refine the design. Councilmembers indicated their support and asked staff to return with formal actions or capital plans if needed.
Staff flagged revenue options including sale of adjacent property along Central Avenue and potential dedicated public parking. Next steps are to proceed with selective timbering, conduct public input and present implementation steps and funding options to council for formal approval if required.
