Eagle Scout seeks grills for city parks; council to check possible gambling-fund support

Eagle Scout candidate Kody Nelson presented a proposal Sept. 19 to install four grills in Reck Park and Trimble Park as his scout project.
Nelson said the project scope includes one grill by the Lions Shelter, one by the equipment shelter, one by the splash pad center and one by the park memorial. He described installation on 2x2-foot concrete pads with drilled anchors and adjustable grates. Nelson reported $1,220 in donations to date from local businesses and individuals (Teals, Mille Lacs Disposal, First National Bank, Baas Construction, Heggies Pizza, CD Mechanical, Arrow Building Center and his family). Steel grills are estimated at $1,400 (would likely last five to 10 years); stainless-steel grills are estimated at $2,700 (longer life). Nelson asked whether the council could provide a $200 donation to reach the steel-grill target.
City Manager Tammy Pfaff said the city could not directly donate from general funds at that time but would check whether gambling funds could be used and would consult state auditors and the city attorney to ensure compliance. The council did not vote to provide a donation at the Sept. 19 meeting; staff follow-up was requested.
