The Milaca City Council on Sept. 19 completed a first reading of Ordinance #532 to amend Chapter 115 (Peddlers, Solicitors and Transient Merchants) by adding mobile food units.
Mayor Dave Dillan opened discussion by asking whether the council wanted to limit the number of days a vendor with a year license could operate; councilors said they preferred to keep licensing unlimited for the ordinance’s first reading, noting seasonality and market forces would likely limit activity. Communications Specialist Mary Mickelson said staff added language requiring vendors to request permission for special events, and that vendors must hold the State of Minnesota license; the city will require a background check and the fine for violations was increased in the draft. Norris Johnson moved for approval of the first reading; Lindsee Larsen seconded; the council voted unanimously in favor.
The ordinance is at first-reading stage; further revisions or a second reading and adoption would be required before the new rules take effect.
